How to Prepare a Simple Spiritual Meal

Cupboards slammed! From in the kitchen I hear, “holy crap mom, there is no food!”

Gently, (because all moms are gentle, right? :)) I lay my laptop on the ottoman, get up from my studying, and go to the kitchen. Smiling at my undernourished teenager, I open the cupboards to see if what he said were true. After all, there was food in there yesterday. I knew there were at least the staples in there. How could it have disappeared so quickly?

“Yes there is. There is lots of food. It is food you need to prepare, but there is plenty of food to eat.”

“I do not want to prepare the food. I just want to eat something now.”

As he said that statement, I quickly realized I was guilty of not wanting to prepare the special food that I receive for my spirit. I just want something quick, easy, and already prepared. Isn’t that really how you want it too? Pop in a CD. Turn on a TV dinner. Open up a can of an already prepared passage.

Spiritually speaking there is plenty of special food to eat daily. The cupboards are full of 66 chapters. The staples of Scriptures mixed together with the awesome sauce of the Holy Spirit leaves a satisfying taste in your mouth. However, we do sometimes have to prepare our special food by setting our table and preparing it with salt and peppered prayer. We may need our special food to boil in the pot of perseverance, and wait on God for your fill of the day. But there is always enough of His Word to feed your spirit man.

“Son, let me teach YOU how to prepare that box of macaroni and cheese.”

Once I showed him how easy it was to prepare something, he became the king of concoctions in the kitchen. He was ready to make kool-aid next. Oh the love of raising teenagers!

You may be struggling to find your fill from the cupboards of the kingdom as well. So I would like to show you how easy it is to prepare a heavenly meal from scratch.

Now, in my kitchen I do things a little differently. For those of you who have not been acquainted with my kitchen, then please have a seat and learn a few trade secrets.

First things first, it is very important to set your table:

1. You will need a plate…to put your Special Food; your portions on.

2. You will need a fork…to dig into, to bring back to you to chew on.

3. You will need a knife…to rightly divide, to cut into bite size pieces, to slice it up nice.

4. You will need an empty cup…to pour more of Him into your emptiness.

5. You will need a napkin…for your tears.

Now that you have set your table, let’s prepare the meal.

Today I am going to teach you how to prepare a simple meal. Open up a box of Belief. You can find it in God’s storehouse down John’s aisle 2 and shelf 22, if you don’t have it already stored in the cupboard of your heart. Draw out some living water (John 4) from the well of the Holy Spirit and begin to stir it up and boil or bubble up for about 10 minutes to make it soft enough to stick to the wall of your heart. Once it is soft then you should add the butter of His body (1 Corinthians 15) and the sauce of His Spirit, and mix in the milk of His Word, and wallah you have yourself a tasty feast of faith filled food.

After your meal is prepared, stick your fork (your pen) and your knife (highlighter) into the Special Food and taste His goodness. Do not be like the sluggard who refuses to bring the fork to his mouth. Because when you take the time to prepare with persevering prayer, you will be fully satisfied as you dig into His Word which has been marinating in the crock-pot of prophecy before the creation of time.

A sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he will not even bring it back to his mouth! Proverbs 19:24

A sluggard’s appetite is never filled, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied. Proverbs 13:4

What about you? Do you have any Special Food to share? Now that you know how to prepare a kingdom concoction then I am sure you can come up with many inspirational ingredients to fill your fridge of faith. What is one staple you just have to have on the shelf of your heart?

Love this, Jodie. Yes, I am guilty. I get impatient and I just want the Spirit to tell me what to do. Thank you for this reminder that when we prepare ourselves and time take for Him to speak, we can be nourished and fulfilled.
